Our vision for relationships and health education
Our aim is to help children understand themselves, build respectful relationships, care for their wellbeing and make safe choices, grounded in our Catholic ethos and respect for every person.
What children learn
We use Ten Ten’s Life to the Full Plus. The curriculum revisits Created and Loved by God, Created to Love Others and Created to Live in Community. The themes appear in both Year A (2026–27) and Year B (2027–28), with age-appropriate content and a two-year overview. Reception includes personal, social and emotional development and age-appropriate learning about relationships and safety.
Essential Knowledge and progression
Children build understanding of feelings, friendship, personal relationships, health, safety and community. Key ideas are revisited as children grow and can discuss more complex situations.
A learning journey: Younger children learn to name feelings, recognise trusted adults and practise kind, respectful friendship. Older pupils revisit relationships with more complex questions about boundaries, safety and responsible choices, including online situations. Learning about health likewise develops from everyday routines and asking for help towards explaining reasons for safe choices. The three Ten Ten themes return in each phase, with more challenging discussion as children mature.
How we teach it
Teachers use the school’s approved programme to present age-appropriate content, establish respectful discussion and connect learning to everyday choices and Catholic teaching.
DISCERN in this subject: Children begin with a familiar, age-appropriate situation, recall relevant ideas and learn clear language for a new concept. Supported discussion and shared reasoning allow them to consider choices safely. The teacher checks understanding before children give an individual response; later teaching revisits the principle in a different situation.
How all children take part
Teachers explain vocabulary clearly, listen respectfully to children’s questions and adapt support so that children can understand and participate. The school works with families when a child needs additional support.
How we check learning
Discussion, questions and age-appropriate tasks help teachers check what children understand and identify anything that needs clarification or revisiting.
The school’s Marking and Feedback Policy also applies here. Evidence may be spoken, practical, digital or written: a brief observation, question, performance, product or recorded response can show the Essential Knowledge. Feedback identifies the next useful step and informs what the teacher revisits.
Beyond the classroom
Relationships, online experiences, health and community life give children chances to apply what they learn. The school shares information with parents and carers so that conversations can continue at home.
